Snow chains and road conditions in winter

When chains are required and who checks

Snow chains are required when there is snow or ice on the road, not all winter. The police (Carabineros) and CONAF, the national park service, check at the start of the climb, and on some days only 4x4 vehicles are let through. Before driving up, check the road conditions with CONAF: +56 65 248 6115.

Where to rent snow chains near Ensenada

TerraSur does not rent snow chains: get them in Puerto Varas before you set off.

Weather and webcams: check the volcano today

The weather on Osorno Volcano changes fast, and it can be windy or cloudy up there even when Ensenada is clear. Before you leave, check the live webcam of the mountain center, at centrovolcanosorno.cl, and the forecast for the day. If the center closes because of bad weather, your ticket is moved to another day; it is not refunded.

A snowy run and the chairlift below the summit of Osorno Volcano

Osorno Volcano ski resort

The ski area is now called Centro Volcán Osorno; it used to be known as Centro de Ski y Montaña Volcán Osorno. We do not run it: lift tickets, lessons and rentals are sold on its official site, centrovolcanosorno.cl.

Season, chairlifts and opening hours

The season depends on the snow. In 2026 it opened on 28 June, and in 2024, in May. It has two chairlifts, Enlace and Glaciar, and a surface lift in the Zorros area, where the ski school and the rental shop are. Opening hours change every season: check the official site before you go.

Prices: lift tickets, lessons and gear rental

In winter 2026, an adult day ticket starts at CLP 32,000 in low season. There are group and private lessons, and full gear rental. Prices change every season: check the rates on the official site.

Not skiing: scenic chairlift, tubing and sledding

You do not need to ski to go up. The scenic chairlift is one ride up and one ride down, from CLP 15,000 for children and CLP 24,000 for adults. At the Primavera station there is tubing and sledding, and the Mirador restaurant is at the top.

Osorno Volcano in summer: viewpoints and Cráter Rojo

The paved road is open all year. The scenic chairlift runs all year, and from the car park and the chairlift you can see Lake Llanquihue and the nearby volcanoes. To walk on the volcano, we run the glacier trek on the volcano.

Two roped climbers going up the glacier with ice axes

Ski area or summit: two different trips

By car you can only reach the mountain center. The summit, at 2,652 m, is reached on foot, with glacier gear and a certified guide; the ski area does not offer that climb. We run the guided climb to the summit of Osorno, which starts from our base in Ensenada.

Where to stay near Osorno Volcano

Ensenada is the village at the foot of the volcano. Barlovento is there, the same company at the same base as TerraSur: cabins at the foot of the volcano and a campsite by Lake Llanquihue. On the road up there is also Refugio Teski, a separate business with rooms and a restaurant. The cabins have pellet, wood or electric heating.
